This BMW 318i is being sponsored by Izzy's. The owner, Bud Scott, has been a long time member of the SCCA and has participated in countless Autocross' and track days with the BMW and is already running fairly competitive times in the cars current prep levels.
The 318i's sunroof chassis meant that the best possible solution for the downbars was a halo design. Per the rules, this allowed us an extra bend to keep the headroom at it's maximum while retaining the 1.75x.095 tubing. To help support the halo and reinforce the extra bend, a 1.5"x.095 gusset was used at the main hoop joints as well as the downbar/halo joints.
The build of the cage required a balance between weight and triangulation. The relitively low power of the 318 required every tube to count without adding unnecessary weight. If the rear needs to be "stiffened" later, a X brace in the rear will be added.
